advantages with porcelain veneers
When
is it good to choose porcelain veneers?
|
Porcelain
veneers could be used to cover or hide fillings that have been
stained or discoloured. |
|
When
the teeth is discoloured by tetracycline, flour or by trauma. |
|
Veneers
are an alternative to orthodontics to close the big gap between
the teeth (diastema) or correct crocked teeth without using
braces. |
|
Earlier
attempt to aesthetic bonding could often be masked by porcelain
veneer. |
What
advantages have porcelain veneers before other bonding techniques?
Two
of the biggest advantages are:
|
Porcelain
veneers are very similar to a natural tooth.
The
tooth's enamel is not fully solid; it is an outer transparent
shell. This means when the light beam hit the surface of the
tooth. The light will not be reflected, but instead penetrate
the enamel and reflect the dentine which is behind the enamel.
It's the dentine in the tooth that gives the tooth the white
colour. That the enamel is transparently is important to give
the tooth it's typically looking.
|
Before
today's veneers, the dentist had only access to half transparent
materials. Most of the light was reflected before it reached
the dentine. The result was better appearance but look still
unnatural.
|
The
light on today's porcelain veneers penetrates the veneer's
surface and is reflected by the underlying dentine. This transparency
gives the tooth a very natural look.
|
|
Porcelain
veneers resist discolouring and stains better than other bonding
techniques, this because the surface of the veneer is covered
by impenetrable porcelain. |
