The capital of Poland

Warsaw has 1.6 million citizens, Staro Miasto - The Old Town was almost in ruined by the Germans. The old town is surrounded with an old reconstructed town wall.

At the beginning of the Old Town there is a castle and close to the castle is a statue of Sigismund III, Swedish King. The statue is the oldest monument and it is dated to 1644.

The Polish people have worked very hard to refurbish buildings in Old Town. The king castle Aamek Króelwski was rebuilt as late as 1971.

If you follow the street Piwna you will come to the St. Martin Church. In the church there are a painting depicting the heroes from the war and the resistant movement. This church also was badly hit during the Second World War II. Around the square you can see the old beautiful house. They vary totally ruined by the Germans. Thanks to preserved old drawings they could be rebuilt, Round the square there are several small restaurants you can visit for a meal, a beer or a cup of coffee.

Warsaw was hit very badly by grenades and bombs during World War II, but when you approach the city by flight you will hardly notice it. The River Vistula divides the city in two parts. The west area of the river is most interesting for tourists with its modern centre and The old town.
